Does a montbell SS stretch enough to use as an overbag ??

Also what would be preferential in below freezing weather.

Down/down
Down over syn
Syn over down
Syn over syn

I assume if using a VB and it was fairly dry cold it really would not matter, with down preferable for weight.

I would also assume syn over down or syn over syn would handle adverse humidity better.

How about for a 3+ day soaking foggy and rainy weather on the AT ranging from 40 to 20dF.

Just curious.

Thanks in advance.

I think the footbox would be a problem. My SS UL #5 does not open all the way up to make a blanket.

Troy:

I own a "non stretch" Montbell bag (the Down Hugger No. 3) — and I can fit my Montbell Thermal Sheet (which is essentially a hoodless No. 5 down bag) inside without over compressing or cold spots or any other problems.

So unless your intended liner bag is a huge, serious winter bag — I would say you should have no problems using your much, much stretchier Montbell as an outer bag.

My SS does stretch a huge amount, so I could see it working; however, I would definitely keep it as the outer bag so the down doesn't get compressed. I haven't doubled up bags yet, but it seems as though a lot of people on this site have with pretty good success. What I have done in the winter is to wear my layers – the outermost being the Cocoon pulover and pants – to sleep in so that when I have to get up I'm already dressed warm. Happy trails!

I was about to build a quilt, but as of Thurs I will have 5 bags, so I am wondering why do I need to build a quilt right now at all.

So what I have is….

Old Snow lion polarguard 35 degree, delofted to about 45dF – 4 pounds – too heavy for a 45 dF rating.

Old Snowlion down 10" loft 4 pound bag. Way to warm for where I will be, but in superb shape.

Got a Euraka 15dF Casper that is too narrow for me, but it slides right into my old polarguard bag which got me thinking. My old polarguard bag is roomy.

Decided to get a UL SS down 1#4oz bag for SUL, and I also got a #3 synthetic 30dF bag.

I just returned a montbell #4 Syn bag, as I got the wrong zipper (right) but for some reason I did not try to stuff one of my other bags into it as a test.

I think I might try to use the MB #4 down inside the MB #3 syn and see what happens.

The Casper is definately going back. Too narrow.

My old polarguard bag is going to the parents house as an emergency bag.

I should sell my old down -40dF down bag, but I have had it so long I am sort of attached.
