What method of bug protection does everyone use with the pyramid style shelters?

I have been eyeballing the MLD Duomid. I like the space and ventilation looks OK with upper vent and pitching options but it looks like the venting options create insect entry points. Its not the crawlers that I worry about but the flying blood drinkers. I don't want to sit in my shelter with a headnet.

I can't comment as a 'user' as haven't taken delivery of mine yet.

I've heard that MLD is planning a bug 'nest' but heard no news on production dates as yet.

Meanwhile, I think the six moon designs serenity shelter should work well.

Christopher,
I have a Hex3 (now Shangrila3) and I really like the pyramid design for winter camping (no bugs) but I have come to the conclusion that they aren't ideal for bug season. Not only is it hard to keep bugs out, but bug season is also "hot" season and there simply isn't enough ventilation for me in that type of shelter.

I did go through the process of adding noseeum bug netting around the perimeter of mine, about a 16" strip, but in the end, I wasn't satisfied.

Greg,

Yes, your MYOG one looks the biz! Were all my dreams to come true (think I've seen this suggested elsewhere) I like the idea of an asymetrical with – say an extra 15" at the head end. Like to make me one? ;-)

Yep, sure MLD will come up with one before long.

Re; pyramids and hot weather. They can either be pitched up higher for better ventilation, or if it's not raining you can open up a whole side for full-on ventilation, views etc. Great for a real open air experience but full rain coverage always available – so ideal for ever changeable UK conditions.

I am planning a cuben mid to be built by someone for me and they have suggested a mesh floor rather than a bug net inner. They have used this before succesfully. I have never encountered this set up and was wondering if anyone else has and what your reaction is? Supposedly you can put a ground cloth underneath or on top.

Hi Michael

I've been considering doing this to mine. Could you share exactly what you didn't like about this setup, or better yet, some pictures?

Check out the Wild Oasis at SMD. The netting does not just go to the ground it it folds 6-8" into the floor (or what would be the floor). It can be held down by putting gear over it. The shelter has plenty of room for one and gear. I'm 5'11" The feet and head can be angled so the they are right under a seam which means the sides are held far back from the prone body, ie. head or feet won't easily hit the sides. It is an excellent shelter.

Devin,

My dissatisfaction was two fold:
1. The netting is hard to seal, especially for crawling bugs.
2. Pyramids are hot in summer/bug season compared to SMD Lunar Duos or TT Double Rainbows.
