Eric Parsons put the finishing touches on his 2022 Alaska Winter Wilderness Classic trip report recently, and it was an enjoyable read and superb slideshow. Very low snow levels and very cold temperatures in the beginning as they skied through the Gates of the Arctic from the Haul Road to Anaktuvuk Pass. More snow and milder temps on the next leg to Wiseman. There is a video and map at the end of the post. Check it out.

I read the trip report and saw all the fantastic photos and was white with envy. To be self sufficient for that long and to travel that varied terrain and ALASKAN winter weather conditions is just amazing. Anyone even attempting this “classic” is to be congratulated. Finishers need a small monument or at least a medal, IMHO.

The toughest ski “trip” I ever took was the 2 day, 100 mile Canadian Ski Marathon in the early 80s. We went from Lachute Quebec to the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Ontario. Ski 10 miles then stop for coolies, chocolate covered raisins and water at a “feed” station then ,with renewed blood sugar levels, head out for another 10 mikes. Starting the 2nd day was the toughest part.

The Alaskan Winter Wilderness Classic is a backcountry skiers’ dream. A tough dream but a dream nevertheless.
