I've seen some guys recently doing some modifications to their Ion packs, and I've gotten some interest as well.

However, before I jump in, I want to ask about its feasibility for it to pull multi-duty for me. Therefore, I have the following questions:

Can you fit a 13" laptop in the pack?

Do you think that, if straps/buckles were added, the structure of the pack could support carrying snowshoes?

Sad to say, I sold that pack along to a (BPL) friend. I hate to see that one go, but I had to clear some room (and $).

Please don't remind me…

Not answering your question but just thinking out loud…

The Ion's main attribute is its no-nonsense simplicity. If you want versatility, why not just get the Relay (or similar)? Unless at heart, it is the prospect of making mods to a pack that is what's really attracting you…

I realize the Ion's virtues in simplicity. I'm also parlaying that into it being a blank slate as well, and open to customization (which some ULers might scorn).

Sometimes I'd rather start fresh than correct problems. Must be my state of mind right now…

I had the Relay, and sold it, because it overlapped with other packs I had. Loved that pack, but it didn't do everything I needed it to.

Joe — I asked because time and again, I've found myself in that "state of mind" too. :)

An odd request but it got me curious… I put my Dell D620 in the Ion with no problems. It has a 14.1 inch screen

it's who "made" it Matt, it was discontinued- ULA made it.

Laptop – Yes, but it would definitely distorts the pack and make it very uncomfortable to wear – especially if you bulked up the laptop with a protective case. I won't do it, even though it could.

Snowshoes – It could, but the pack wouldn't want to carry that much weight, very uncomfortable. Also, where would you put the snowshoes? On the back – it would mess up the weight distribution, especially since snowshoes are heavy, and make the pack uncomfortable. I guess you could put one snowshoe on either side of the pack because the pack is narrow, but your elbows would still probably hit the sides.

In conclusion; I would not use an Ion to hold a laptop or snowshoes.

Joe,

Your Relay didn't travel far from home, so we can always make arrangements if you'd like a weekend reunion with it. I haven't had a chance to get out with it myself as I've been swamped with work. Maybe on our next East PA hike…..

This seems like the conclusion I'm coming to myself. I'm working on some pack mods for my current pack (better water bottle pockets)

Chris, I think I may need some alone time with the Relay.

Once tax season is done for you, and I'm done with the thesis, we need to get another section done. PA 183-Port Clinton?

Joe,

That sounds like a good section to me. I've actually never been on the AT north of Clark's Valley where we started our dayhike in December.

I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and CAN'T WAIT to back into the woods.
