I want a pack just for overnight or maybe 2 night trips. I have a vapor trail right now, and its alright. It works I guess. Anyway, I wanted to know if you guys thought my gear would fit in a golite ion.

I have

Tarptent Contrail
REI subkilo 20
prolite 3 short
MSR ti kettle
myog stove

Everything else is just the little essential stuff that shouldn't take up much room – first aid kit, blister kit, extra pair of socks.

All i need to get is a windshirt.
I would only use this pack during the summer.

Would this all fit in an ion or am i dreaming and should start looking for another little pack.

Yes, it would work.

Compress the heck out of the Contrail, maybe a smaller stuff sack

Same with the bag

Carry as few additional items as you feel comfortable with and enjoy this fine exercise.

Brian Doble used this pack on his SOBO of the AT in 08 and survived 75 days, short trips in warm weather are doable.

you should not have an issue. I have an Ion and it is amazing how much stuff fits in there. Put the Prolite deflated and flat against your back, stuff everything in as tight as possible and semi-inflate the pad to take up any extra volume.

So what is the real problem with the Vapor Trail? Sure the ion is lighter, but the VT is a bomber compared to the ion for not that much weight "penalty". If you are finding yourself with too much room then don't compress everything so much and let your sleeping bag fill more space.
