I've been using my girlfriend's new snowshoes, MSR Women's Lightning Ascent 22, and I'm wondering if anybody else has done this to help save weight? It saves 6 ounces for the pair versus using the male version, however it is 3/4" narrower. I am 5'10" and 145 lbs, and I mainly snowshoe in goretex trail runners in spring time when the snow is much harder (if there's powder, I cross country ski).

There is plenty of room for my shoe in her snowshoes, as I'm sure they're designed for boots, so would going to the men's version make the binding work not as well?

I'm your same size in both height and weight, I also use trailrunners for snowshoeing. I use the mens version of the MSR Lightning Ascent and the binding works well with my size 10 shoes.

Thanks for the post. My shoe size 10.5-11, so I'm sure that the men's would be fine for me. I just can't stop thinking about an extra 3 ounces per foot. I know it wouldn't really be noticeable, but I commonly run flats/downhills in my snowshoes so it would make a difference. My current snowshoes are a Red Feather racing pair and they launch snow all over my back (crappy binding spring action, but helps in running) and I get bad heel drift (more crappy binding). They are more comfortable on the tops of my feet, though, and have a cool tapered tail.

We're supposed to get a few more inches of snow starting tomorrow, so maybe I'll get a chance to see if the women's shoes give me any flotation at all in the soft stuff.

I'm so over winter.
