Hi all,

Newbie MYOG'er here. I'm planning a silnylon poncho tarp and I've heard that edging sil with grosgrain really helps stabilize the load when you tie it out. First of all, is this true?

If so, does anyone know the weight per yard of 3/4" and 3/8" grosgrain per yard? I was thinking 3/4 for edging and 3/8 for tie-outs. Of course I want to figure final weight to be sure what size I want before I start.

Alternative ideas gladly accepted. Thanks!

Hi Jane

I found that silnylon is a lot more elastic than grosgrain tape, to the point that they have a serious mismatch in behaviour. So instead I make a 15 mm hem with two folds on my tents. That seems to work well. Just don't make the stitches too tight: low tension on the machine.

Cheers

Thanks Roger!

So, to be sure I get this right, fold the silnylon (narrowly)twice and hem it? Then attach tie-outs to that?

That saves a bit of $ as well then. Cool.

FYI, just in case you are still interested….

3/4 GG, 3 yards weighs .46 oz.
