Looking for suggestions on an approx. 200-weight Thermal Pro fleece with a hood. I want hand-warmer pockets and preferably no other features.
The Melanzana High Loft Hoodie (http://melanzana.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/22/products_id/68) looks completely perfect feature-wise but is just going to be a bit too thick/warm & heavy for me (want it to be good while active in cold & wet climates). The grid fleece, on the other hand, is similar to an R1 and is a little too light.
Is there something in the middle out there? R2 is the right fabric thickness, but doesn’t have a hood, and gains an unneeded chest pocket. R3 has a hood but is again too heavy/thick. Mountain Hardware Monkey Man 200 (http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mens-monkey-man-200-jacket-OM5786.html) looks like the right fabric, but has no hood, and again an unnecessary chest pocket. Their lighter Monkey Man Grid (http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mens-monkey-man-grid-ii-jacket-1572301.html) has thinner fabric than what I want.
Seems like everyone is duplicating the same pieces: an R1-weight grid fleece with a good hood, and R2-weight jacket with NO hood, then an R3-weight or more with a hood. But no one seems to be making a 200/R2 weight Thermal Pro with a hood for some reason!
Mar 22, 2017 at 2:45 pm #3458703The Mammut Bora fleece is thermal pro with a full zip and hood. Not sure the weight but I would guess around 100-200 based on item weight and features.

Mar 22, 2017 at 3:03 pm #3458707Thanks. I remember seeing that and initially discarded it as the fabric doesn’t look very lofty at all (at least not what I would expect from a 200-weight Thermal Pro). But, the total weight at around 14oz seems about right for that kind of fabric. So maybe it’s closer than I thought.
As an alternative, I could build my own, but can’t seem to find 200-weight Thermal Pro fabric for sale anywhere any more.
Mar 22, 2017 at 5:22 pm #3458738millyardage.com has 200 weight thermal pro, check their seconds as well. Also post here if you find something suitable. I’ve looked too and haven’t found something that’s quite right.
Mar 22, 2017 at 7:52 pm #3458768Hmm, thanks, but I’m not actually sure they’re selling Thermal Pro. It just says ThermalPro (for some reason) under the description of the fabrics titled “Classic 200”, and the fabrics look a lot more like Classic than Thermal Pro.
They are selling some 4060 (Thermal Pro) as 2nds, but only in a very heavy/thick 1lb/yd2 variant.
Mar 22, 2017 at 8:59 pm #3458784You might give them a call, they are the retail store for Polartec’s Lawrence MA location. Thermal pro is a fairly broad range of fabrics, not just 4060. A lot of it is relatively lower pile. I wonder if the 90g polartec alpha they have would hold up as a hoody. Might be worth a try. Their alpha direct 90 doesn’t look much different and is designed for use without a scrim. They have that by the roll only, here: https://milldirecttextiles.com/fullrollseries.asp?dept=34&id=1710105710525425402870 If you wanted to add a scrim, you could add a layer of RBTR 0.5oz mesh – it’s got a surprisingly soft hand and decent 2 way mechanical stretch. Also as far as the listed weights go, I wouldn’t trust them. I bought some double sided high loft from them some time ago and it was around 9.4oz/yd2….320 weight.

Mar 23, 2017 at 4:15 am #3458833If you’re looking at hoodies made from Alpha, here’s a short non-exhaustive list of similar items:
Patagonia Nano-Air 385g
Patagonia Nana-Air Light 309g
Rab Paradox 330g
Rab Alpha Direct 480g
Montane Halogen Alpha 351g <- Looks like Rab Paradox
Montane Fusion Alpha 461g <- Heavy and not very breathable looking
Mountain Equipment Kinesis 325g <- Shell doesn’t look very breathable
OR Deviator Hoody 321g <- Alpha and Power GridMar 23, 2017 at 4:59 am #3458835I have swatches of MillYardage’s Alpha offerings and I wouldn’t use any of them as a stand alone fabric for a hoody, not even the alpha direct. They are nowhere near 200 weight fleece, and very open weave.
Edward, I’ve been in touch with Mill Yardage’s owner by email and they merged with Mill Direct Textiles, so now anything that was on Mill Direct’s website (full rolls) can be ordered by the yard as well. I had been interested in a DIY Alpha Direct jacket but have been unable to find suitable stretch nylon fabric for the shell.
