I'll be hiking the JMT in August and I REALLY want to get a pair of GG Lightrek 4 poles. Completely closed they are 33" long and won't fit into my pack (24" long max). I could probably rig a heavy cardboard tube for the trip out, but I can't figure out a way to get them back home with me, having discarded the tube upon arrival.

Any suggestions?

When I carry on my backpack — I pack my poles and blade inside a cardboard tube (available for sale at most PO's) and check that in.

When I check my entire backpack — I stash my poles in the side pockets and strap tightly with the side compression straps (can you do that with your pack as well?). I then put the entire pack inside one of those super big and heavy duty plastic bags that a few airlines still give out for free. I know United Airlines still does. Grab two — use one on the outbound and stash the second for return use. It folds down to almost nothing and weighs 4.5 oz.
