I just got a set of microspikes for use on the crusty spring snow of PNW trails, and I was wondering if anyoune had some good suggestions on how to store them when you aren't wearing them. a crampon pouch would obviously be overkill, but I don't want them shredding my pack inadvertently.

what do you suggest?

I have carried them a number of times with no issues – I carry them in the bag they came in (for both me and the kid's pair). If wet or I will need them again that day I just attach them to my pack using a compression strap, so they hang down the back.

Unlike traditional crampons they are more blunt sharp, than razor sharp so no damage to your pack :-) If packing inside I just roll them up in that heavy duty bag as mentioned above.

I'm using the zippered case to my REI medium pack cover…about 5 in x 2 in x 4 in. It's sufficiently big and sturdy enough to handle the weight with plastic bits that let me lock it onto a strap or belt.

Another vote for the bag they came in and just stuff them into my pack. If I'm taking them off and on, I carefully slip them under my compression straps on the outside of the pack. Either way, they seem happy :-)

so, did you all get them in a nylon bag or something, because mine came in a sealed plastic bag, not really reusable (especially since I threw it away ;-))

I didn't get a bag with mine. I just use an extra tent peg bag. Works fine.

Yes Joshua, a pretty heavy duty plastic bag. I'm sure it won't last forever but it made it through two winter hiking seasons.

I agree with Sarah. The microspikes aren't very sharp.

I use a gallon size freezer bag.

If I am carrying them with delicate gear (like a sleeping bag or down jacket), I use a small square Zip-Lock container. If I am just stuffing them in a day pack I use a Zip-lock freezer bag.

Yep, I use the free plastic bag they came in, though a gallon Ziploc freezer bag would work well. Keeps snow and dirt out of everything!
