I have a golite ion and I really like the 3D mesh straps. I think it works so well because straps is breathable. On the other hand all other packs I have seen here are backed by a coated fabric or CCF. That would make the straps non-breathable. I am not sure how much comfort 3D mesh adds in these straps.

Many manufactures save weight by not having mesh backpanel and I havent read any complaints. Why not save some weight by not having 3D mesh in straps?

I am specially interested in hearing from those who have also used packs which dont have 3D mesh eg. GG Murmer, Zpacks. Have you felt any significant discomfort due to lack of 3D mesh?

I can see it…

No insight on the mesh, though, sorry.

I think the mesh causes the pack to not slide around as much (more friction). But, I think the "evaporative cooling" aspect is marketing spin.

However, I also think it makes the pack look more finished & like higher end equipment – so I'd add it to my pack if I was a manufacturer and wanted more sales to the mainstream folks.

Martin has different 3D meshes in his shop. Used it already and it is equal/comparable to those the big brands use.

But it is not UL ;)

Try it. He also got other interesting stuff you would not find on the other side of the big lake…

Edit: Thru-hiker maybe the better source for you.
BTW have you already finished one project? :)

Hi Snuffy-

ouch! Your comment wounds me. :(

I have spent big bucks ordering materials for sleeping pad and softshell smock/pants "ideas". You will see some interesting stuff in next few weeks.

Thanks for reminding extremtextil.de. They have very interesting stuff. Shelby has nice selection too though only one choice of 3D mesh. I have ordered some samples from shelby.

Cheers,
Huzefa

" You will see some interesting stuff in next few weeks."

I'm looking forward to this :). I also hope that my comment encourages you even more.

Some years ago i also ordered several times at shelby, but their stock is quite the same over all the years, shipping is expensive and extremtextil offers a lot high quality fabrics from Malden Mills, Schoeller, Gore etc. So they became my first choice.

good luck

Oliver
