Are there any specific cottage industry manufacturers that will do modifications to big-name gear? I'm thinking of enlarging the ventilation screen on a bivy…

If you were in Berkeley,California you could take the bivy to Narain's, on San Pablo Ave., just across the street from REI. I've had them modify various tents, sleeping bags, etc. for years. They aren't cheap but they do very good work. Narain's is also a good source for various nylon cloth and all sorts of Fastex type fasteners. They also stock zipper parts.

You might try the yellow pages in your area and look for tent repairs or some such heading. Have you asked any of the outfitters in your area?

I would also wager that you could find a local tailor that would do some of this stuff. They commonly deal with different materials, but the process isn’t too different.

Your best bet is to ask around your local outdoor gear stores about people who do tent repairs. These folks tend to repair other kinds of gear — and may take on mod jobs within reason.

Penny! I forgot about Penny at Specialty Outdoors. She probably has already done this mod. Thanks!
