I am slowly switching over to wool and was wondering what kind of layering systems people are using with it. I am thinking about going with an Icebreaker Superfine 140 Tech T for warmer conditions and then a Bodyfit 200 Mondo Zip for when it gets cooler out. This with a wind/rain shell should keep me good down to 40F correct? Thanks

Wool layering systems?

If I am moving around (i.e. hiking) I find that a mid to light layer like 180g-200g is fine to roughly about freezing with just a wind shirt. I'll usually use liner gloves and a thin fleece cap as it nears the 40 degree mark.
This is so highly objective though. For the same conditions, I have one friend who will be wearing a t-shirt baselayer, lightweight wool long sleeve, 100 wt. fleece vest, and his wind shirt or rain jacket.
Your suggestions are a good place to start but you'll probably have to test drive the system to be sure. Do it on a dayhike or overnighter, not a 6 day trip :)
I have used them both in combination with a houdini. The shirt combined with the windbreak kept my warm while hiking in 40 degree temps adding the other shirt while active would keep me warm at freezing, when not moving however you will want some real insulation.
Brett, what you describe is pretty much what I use, but as Sean suggests, come evening you'll want a good insulating layer. I use the Montbell Down Inner Jacket for that, and when combined with a Houdini windshirt, gloves and balaclava I'm comfortable to around freezing. If I add a light fleece zip-T, then Im good into the twenties.
