Anyone know a good cheap source for shock-corded adjustable and non-adjustable aluminum poles? Kelty sells them separately but I wonder if there's a cheaper source.

I found out from Kelty you can use the Noah's Tarp 16 as a Car Tarp with some simple modifications, but the catenary cut could make it sit a little less taught when deployed sideways instead of diagonally. In any case the Walmart or Harbor Freights tarps are much cheaper and not much heavier.

EJ,
For car camping I use adjustable paint roller poles. They are aluminum, about 1/2 to 3/4 in diameter, and are about 40" long in compact mode. Not light, but bomb-proof for big tarps in wide open spaces.

the grey ones are heavy duty but a lot more expensive, the blue are the standard weight that most companies carry. I generally stick with the blue and camo tarps from them. The grey ones will last longer and the eyelets won't tear out as easy. but if an incident of tearing happens they sell these which are quick, or perminent fix for if an eyelet pulls out.

I've only had one eyelet pull out recently and that was mainly because the way the tarp was strung up and had a huge puddle of water pooled in the tarp. There's so many trees out here i generally don't use poles and try to picth it so that there is minimal pooling of water

here's the most recent pic i have of one of the camo tarps strung up.
