I am a photographer who rolls his own 35mm film, and thus I have quite a few metal 100′ film canisters lying about the home.
They weight 2.5 oz with the lid. I have no idea what kind of metal they are made out of, but I was wondering if they could safely be used as a stove/pot combo for an alcohol stove?

I’d have to improvise a handle, but that is the easy part.
Pretty cool idea, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Can you share the dimensions of the containers? Looks like it could be pot-like enough for boiling, but still pan-like enough for some baking or frying too…

Sure. Its 4″ diameter, 1 1/2 inches tall and the lid, which fits securely on top is 1/2 inch.
Here is a picture of one next to a platypus lid for size reference.
how easialy dose the lid go on and off?
if you are boiling water and the lid is tightly on there, you will burn your hand trying to get it off, you will probably do better with an aluminum foil lid.
it is lighter too :-)
The lid is semi-tight. It would be hard to get on/off easily.
Yes, tinfoil would be better and lighter.
I’ll fire it up with a pepsi can stove today and see what happens with 16 oz of water in it.
I’ll do it outside to avoid any noxious fumes…
As a follow up, it worked just fine to boil some water. No discoloration or anything.
Might be an option, if a bit shallow for some people. It sure works good with side burner pepsi-can stoves because of the width.
