For those old Hardrock lovers out there, I just purchased some 2009 Hardrocks at the REI in Denver. I was told they got my box off the shipping dock so the shoes haven't even reached inside the store yet. Since this is a "flagship" store, I don't know if other REI stores have these yet.

I used a single pair of Hardrocks for 3 seasons
(06-08) and logged about 1200 miles on them, most of which were on the JMT with a 30-40 pound pack. I bought a 2nd pair in 08 only to get caught up in the "altered" shoes that had a grey bottom instead of the old yellow bottom after the company was bought out. The grey bottom ones hurt my feet when hiking or even when just driving around town.

The sole on the 09's is different than either the pre 08's or the 08's, yet, I don't know for sure what other changes have been made. The 09's are a little lighter as my old size 13's weighed 17 oz each and my new size 14's weigh 16 oz.

I plan to take a 15 mile hike in them this weekend with a 25 pound pack and will share my findings on Sunday night. I understand my feet are not your feet, yet, I thought this info might be helpful to some of of you. If you have any other specific questions about the new model that I might be able to answer, please send them and I will do my best.

That's a great idea, Rick! I am a Hardrock fan and I believe that I am not alone on this site. Looking forward to your comments. Have a great hike.

The 2009 Hardrocks felt wonderful on my hike today and reminded me of the versions before Columbia bought them out. The 2008 version (non yellow bottom) really bothered my feet while the older, yellow bottomed ones were incredible.

I know this doesn't necessarily mean the 2009 version will work for all those Hardrock lovers who didn't like this shoe after the buyout, yet, maybe it will offer some optimism to go back and give this great shoe another chance. It seems improved, has the same feel as the older version, and is also slightly lighter.

Rick-could you give us the physical colors of the '09 model for those of us who buy long range from the boonies.

Thanks for the updates, this is good news. Also a hardcore, hardrock user, bummed about the changes in 08/Columbia, been buying old pairs online wherever I can find them.

Here are some photos of the 2009 Hardrocks. In case I goofed with uploading the photos, here is a description of the new 2009 Hardrock.

The inside of the shoe is bright yellow and there is one yellow "Montrail" logo on the outside of each shoe. While there is not as much yellow on the bottom of the 2009 shoe as the pre-Columbia version had, there is some yellow on the sole. The Columbia shoes have no yellow whatsoever on the bottom of the shoes.

The 2009's are darker than the Columbia shoes and the 2009 laces are white with two, thin, yellow bands running along the length of the laces.

Hope this helps.

I was finally able to pick up a pair of the 09 Hardrocks. I liked the older version of the shoe on rocky terrain. I am a fastpacker, but mainly now concentrate all my training on trail running. I wrote up a full review of the hardrock (based on some easy flat running and a 40 mile mountain run) and compared it to the older version. Check it out if you like http://www.justusstull.com/2009/04/02/montrail-hardrock-09-review/
