I am curious as to what size tarp you prefer, as well as how do set it up? I am currently using a 6X10 mostly set up trapezoid style. Most of my hiking is done in the SE.

I have used a 12×10 and a 8×10 and those two sizes have a very large footprint and when you add the 2-3 ft. guylines it is even larger. So because of that large footprint I have gone to smaller BPL Spin Tarp x-pro: 4.25×7.75. A much smaller footprint that will give you better camping options. The 8×10 is good for two people but if you are going solo the smaller footprint will give more camping options. Sorry I usually go with the A-frame and Lean-to style.

My 3 cents

I use an Equinox extension poncho – it comes in at about 5X8. I also set mine up trapezoidal. All sides to the ground and only one line needed. Very simple to pitch and good in the wind. I run a line from the poncho hood out to a tree for additional strength and head room.

I'm 5' 7" and I don't make contact with the material.
