I love my REI Sahara convertibles, but they're noisy (swish, swish sound). Are there any lightweight hiking pants (or trousers :-) that are stealthier? How about the new Thorofares?

I have not had any of the "swishy" noise with my ExOfficio pants. I think zip-offs and shorts tend to do this more than long pants.

It also depends on the kind of nylon.

Mine were hand-me-downs and I'm not sure which ones they are. I'm going to look at ExOfficio.com right now.

cheers

I have a pair of thin ExOfficio pants that are also unusually soft. Kind of a brushed surface. The exact model doesn't seem to be made anymore, but I'm pretty sure it's this same 'Nycott' fabric in Evan's link.

I've found thin softshell pants to be quieter than typical nylon too. My Cloudveil Rodeo's (Inertia fabric) are very quiet, but they might not be made anymore. As for the Thorofare pants – I just have the shirt, but the fabric is quiet once broken in a little. Probably not as quiet as the ExOfficio's, but better suited to cool windy weather compared to ExOfficio Nycott or supplex-type nylon, if that helps.

My wife wears Exficio Amphibs. They are not only quiet, but super soft and comfy.
