I sent out a thread earlier about a lightweight system for mountaineering clothes for summer PNW climbs. I have been thinking and I believe I have discovered a footwear system that will be warm enough in case of storms, but also lightweight and flexible enough for many other temperature levels.

1 – liner socks
2 – RBH Vapor Barrier socks
3 – Smart Wool Mountaineering Socks
4 – Tecnica Leather Boots
5 – Crescent Moon Booties
6 – OR Rocky Mountain High Gaiters

I think that the vapor barrier socks will prevent me from wetting out the insulation in my boots thus causing my leather boots to freeze at night. I also think that the Crescent Moon Booties should provide enough warmth on really cold alpine starts, as well as keep off most moisture from the snow. My crampons are strap style so they will fit on over my leather boots and the Neoprene overboots.

Another nice thing about this system is that it would only force me to have to buy the overbooties and the RBH Vapor Barriers, the later of which I have wanted to play around with for sometime.

My other option is to just go all out and go pick myself up a pair of La Sportiva Trango S Evo Gtx's.

Thoughts?
Best,
Travis

I have thought a lot on this subject but have no experience yet in mountaineering. So keep that in mind.

If you are considering getting a new pair of boots consider scarpa phantom lite or sportiva Batura instead. They weight about 1900 but have built in gaiters. Trango S Evo GTX + gaiters will weights about 1700g. But for 200g more you will have simpler, warmer and more waterproof system. These are b3 boots so they will be great from front pointing but more comfortable then plastics. As far as I know these two are lightest boots in their class.

Both these boots cost $500+ so you will find few reviews. But here are two:

If you are size 47 they are available at a great diescount for $280 at moosejaw. But if you are not and can wait you can find them at 20%-25% discount.

I hadnt heard of Crescent Moon Booties so thanks for head up. They seem to be lighter, warmer, and cheaper then fortybelow. cool!

RBH socks are custom made and are designed to be worn without liner.

Also consider Toastyfeet aerogel insoles.
