I've been working on getting on the gear i need to get into backpacking since December. I am now in need of a tent and came across the MSR fling for about $130. I was wondering what people think of this tent. Is it to heavy at 4lbs packed? Do you like the design? Are there any other tents at this price range that you would recommend? Thanks

I have not used a MSR fling but looking at it seems like it would be a condensation trap. If you can afford it you would be better off with a tent from tarptent or six moon designs. Their tents vent moisture reasonably well and are around half the weight of the fling. Check out the reader reviews here at BPL under single wall shelters to get specific comments on tarptent and six moon designs models.
i would have to agree with the previous post, that you could do better.

Clay, you'll probably find that 4lbs is quite heavy to most of us around here – and that's putting it lightly. I personally like the design, but haven't used it before, and won't because it's too heavy. If you invested a couple more bucks you could get a very worthy (and much better) 3 season shelter. Take a look at the above options givin by the other posters for a start. Good thing is you came to the right place for advice…in the end it is up to you to figure out if these options work for you.
That's an excellent buy and the weight is very reasonable for two people. In fact, the shelter weighs 3 lbs, 6 oz without the centre ridge pole, which equated to a little more than a pound and a half per person. Very good for the space provided. But for a one person shelter, I would look toward something else as mentioned above.
I tested the Fling for four months. The actual weight of the body and all poles was 3 lb 7.3 oz (1.57 kg) You can save 8.7 oz (247 g) by forgoing the center spine pole.
The tent has a lot of room and handled condensation very well. I used it in snow about half the trips. It did OK in high winds but you need to keep the back to the wind.
