I use a Nimbus Ozone as my regular pack. The main reason (besides incredible versatility in fit options) is the super long shoulder straps. I have the XL narrow ones and they're 22" long – a little longer if you count the attachment piece of fabric.

I'm finding most packs are more like 14-16" – a huge difference!

I'm hunting for a ski pack/day pack with very generous shoulder strap length. Unlikely to find 22", but anybody know of anything at least close to this?

Thanks!

Curt,

Try Dana or his team at www. mysteryranch.com. As you probably know MR makes much of its stock for the military and are used to large guys. He'd probably make them longer than stock if you asked nicely. And they have a nifty new ski pack, called the Summit (I think), that I saw at the OR show. Too bad R2 isn't still in business for you – that's where I got my perfect ski pack. Cheers, Richard

Though pricey, some of Dan McHale's packs might fit the bill. All of his packs have much longer shoulder straps than packs from other manufacturers, and he's making some smaller packs now. But are you looking specifically to save weight over your Nimbus Ozone? If so, the McHale packs probably won't help you there.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm mostly looking for a ski/day pack, so lower volume and weight is important. I do have an R2 pack, but it's probably close 4000 cu in. Maybe I can just cinch it way down and go with that. It does have custom super long shoulder straps.

I'll look into the MR stuff, but last time I looked most of their stuff was really heavy. McHale stuff is probably overkill for the relatively random usage this would see. If I was going to go to Dan for a pack I'd be going for a dream backpacking sack :)

Thanks again,

-Curt

Sounds like it's time to get a sewing machine. Making a day pack would be a great place to start with MYOG, or adapting an existing pack. You could re-work the straps on something like a GoLite Ion.
