I came across the new MSR E-bivy which I hadn’t heard about and thought poeple might be interested:

MSR E-Bivy

At 9 oz /250g the weight looks good but could one of our fabric experts comment on ‘coated and taped nylon” in terms of breathability?

They need to get their act together. One part says 7 oz; the other part says 9 oz.

Condensation inside? Don't know.

Cheers

"Their act" probably is together. 7 ounces is probably the weight of the bivy. 9 ounces is probably the bivy and stuff sack and whatever else.

"Minimum Weight: 9 oz/250 g
Packaged Weight: 10 oz/280 g

Ultralight and Compact:: Weighs a mere 7 oz. (.2 kg) and comes factory compressed in soda can-sized stuff sack"

mmm…no that would be a flat out discrepancy on their part…Roger is very correct.

You would think they would like to talk about the fabric a bit more. "Coated nylon" is a little loose. Looks like the street price is ~$80— if it doesn't breathe and you want it for emergency use, you might as well have an Adventure Medical Thermo-Lite for $33 and 6.5oz.

While "their act" might be together regarding designing and manufacturing great products, they have a pretty poorly designed website in terms of product descriptions. This wouldn't be the first time I've been foiled by lack of details on their website.

I asked MSR for fabric details, including breathability, dimensions and weight. Here's what they said:

Top Fabric: waterproof silicone coated nylon
On Breathability: "Although not a true breathable fabric, it does allow the passage of some moisture. You will experience a little moisture inside the next morning. If you pay attention not to breath directly into the bivy the condensation should similar to other silicone coated breathable fabrics."

Bottom Fabric: Polyurethane coated nylon
Trail weight: 9 oz (packed weight i.e. as sold is +1 oz)

The side seams are not factory taped but can be sealed with McNett Sil/Net sealer.

Dimensions: girth is 68" at the shoulders and 54" at the foot.

What think?

Save your money and bring a tarp. If it gets really bad, wrap yourself up in the tarp – between that and this 'bivy' I am not sure what the difference would be.

What think?

Bad idea. Might as well use a big plastic bag.

"similar to other silicone coated breathable fabrics."
