I’m interested in buying a double sleeping bag for my boyfriend and I, but am wondering if it’s better just to zip two mummy bags together. (I have the Western Mountaineering Ultralite and could buy him the Western Mountaineering Alpinlite and possibly zip them together) Any suggestions? Single or Double?

It helps if you’re both around the same height.

If so, you might also consider some of the versatile quilts… like the JacksRBetter No Sniveller quilt. They have omnitape (velcro) running along the short end (to make into a footbox) but you could ask them to put omnitape on the long side too so 2 quilts can be fused into 1 blanket.

More so for a double sleeper, I’m sold on the quilt design because if 1 person overheats its easy for him/her to ventilate without disturbing the other person (ie, no zippers to undo). Another option (albeit more expensive, less versatile) is a Nunatak Arc Double. Great quilts but the downsides are cost and production lead times.

My 2 cents.

Kelly,
Phriteaux and Spock have used a Feathered Friends single, tapered bag with 20 oz of down and a specially contoured, zip-on bottom sheet for several actual trail months. Works great. The zipper on the bottom sheet matches the bag’s standard separating zipper. The sheet is cut in a sort of tulip shape so its wide from the shoulders to the hips then tapers quickly to nothing at about calf heigh where the zipper tapes are sewn together all the way around the foot to the end. What we end up with is a top bag that has a small, warm, comfy foot section. We put our tapered sleeping pads inside most of the time. I added a draft collar for really cold times… just a 16 inch strip of light fleece with 2 slits in it.

The advantages? Well… hanky panky is easier and spooning and two bodies are warmer than one. And you have the weight of only one bag and some extra zipper.
