I'm writing this on behalf of adventurous friends in Russia who are looking for shelter ideas for groups of 2-3 people. The primary problems to resolve are wind protection in tundra areas and large numbers of ticks and biting flies. This would require an enclosed shelter/tent. At the same time, they want to go as ultralight as is reasonably possible.
So far their idea has been to take a pyramid shelter on the market, such as the MLD Spinntex Mid ( http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=35&products_id=64&osCsid=30ed659b846a374e82c96c735ea30d1b ) and sew a silnylon floor to the perimeter netting provided, as well adding a second entrance of bug netting.
At this point, though, we're getting into the $500 range for just a tent, which seems perhaps unreasonably expensive. Anyone have ideas for a lightweight solution to these needs?
– excellent wind shedding
– complete bug protection, including from ground
– as lightweight as possible
– reasonable cost (say, $350-400 max)
Much appreciated.
