Hi all,

I’m starting my journey from heavyweight backpacking to lightweight backpacking and looking for a tarp. I found a good deal on a POE WXtex S-Tarp. Does anyone have any experience with them (see POE Lightweight Shelter Tarps)? How’s the quality, are they waterproof, how does the weight compare to similar tarps, etc. I searched the site for reviews, but didn’t see anything.

Cheers
Al

I'm not a tarp guy, but that looks pretty heavy. MacCat tarps look a lot lighter to me.

Hi Joe and Klas,

Thanks for the responses. It does look a bit heavier than the equivalent sized MacCat rectangular tarps (about 20% more) and about 30% heavier than the MLD. However, I can get one for about 1/3 of the price of the MLD and about 60% the price of an equivalent MacCat. Does anyone have any experience with the POE fabric (durability, waterproofness, etc.)? How much should I pay for each ounce of weight reduction :-P

Cheers

No experience with POE tarps but since they talk about seam sealing I assume they'd be waterproof. Like the others, this seem unnecessarily heavy. Most lightweight 8×10 tarps are less than a pound. If I were you, I'd be looking for a tarp made from nylon (1.1 osy) that has been impregnated with silicone (final weight – 1.3 osy).

I ended up with an Oware tarp and love it. Check out Dave's FlatTarps (8X10 15oz $102) at: http://www.owareusa.com/index.html

Some other 8X10 light tarps to consider for the budget minded:

13oz $65 (lower quality than those below, but hey its cheap)

14.1oz $89 (CatTarp)

14.1oz $110

Thanks Brian,

The Oware FlatTarp 4 does look like a great option at a good price. I'm looking for a 10×12 tarp for family trips (4 of us). The equivalent Equinox is cheaper and slightly lighter, but doesn't look as well constructed (grommets vs. reinforded tie-outs). The CCS tarp looks well constructed, but is quite a bit more expensive than the Oware ($170 vs $119).

Cheers
