Anyone have any idea if spraypainting a micropore rainsuit will damage it? My khaki rainsuit makes me look a bit much like a deer for my liking. I was going to spray paint neon orange pinstripes down the arms and legs and maybe put an orange x on my chest and head.

Tyvek isn’t damaged by spray paint. I don’t know about the polypro used in the micropore rainsuits. Why not test an area?
It will still be waterproof, but you’re going to loose some of the breathability. The paint will plug up the micropores where individual droplets hit, but if you’re just going to put a few pinstripes and an X, that shouldn’t be a problem.
better to lose a little ventillation on my raingear than gain some on my body from a large bore rifle :)
Maybe a Plus sign would be better than an X… (;->)
Or, how about a flashing LED on your hat?
Jay,
You won’t lose much breathability by spray painting your rain gear. Provided that the paint sticks at all, much of it will flake off and the rest will crack. It may still be bright enough for safety. The flasher might be a better idea.
Seriously, several investigations and experiments over the years show that the reason folks get shot accidentally is hunters hallucinate that they see a deer (elk, moose) when they see movement. The reasons for that are complicated and not worth going into. Very bright colors or flashing lights will break through the halucination.
If your really worried about it, you can get blaze orange frogg toggs…
You can also get a blaze orange vest and hat like the hunters wear. Then you can wear it no matter what clothing you are sporting at the time.

AOSafety safety vest, blaze orange, 3/16″ mesh: 1.7 oz. Weight could be reduced by shortening it a bit and eliminating the elastic side straps.
I was thinking of bright orange surveyor’s tape. The mesh vest would be easy and you could use it for walking and bike riding at home too.
If you have an Academy Outdoor near you, they have had a micropore rainsuit in BRIGHT RUBBER DUCKY YELLOW on sale for $6.00. This is identical to the other slick surfaced micropore products.
No one will shoot you thinking you are a deer. However, they might shoot out of aesthetic disgust.
I went ahead and spray painted. The stuff holds paint a lot better than I thought it would, it didn’t bead up and get clumpy as I expected it too. I don’t know how durable the finish will be but it should keep me from getting poached. If I’d taken my time and taped it up I probably could have made it look fairly nice.
Shoulda sent it to me. I could get some of the pachucos in my neighborhood to tag it. They do good work. Very artistic. Very bright. You would only get shot by a rival gang.
