Ok now that Bob's seemingly very cool Henry Coe trip is done. Let's raise hands here and see where we stand for our trip in a few weeks. I suspect the weather will be good, the falls will be pumping and that it should be a fun hike. I have stated that I am going up on Friday and Bob is joing me??? Dennis, you mentioned that you'd like to come up on Friday too. It will be easy to find us my friend, as the campsites are easy to spot others.

Well, the cool thing with you guys going in on Friday is that it opens quotas for Saturday. Jeremy and Tony, as you come up the bridge and come uphill towards the river, you can turn right and head off trail to the river and falls where all the campsites are. Is that where you guys will be???

That sounds right for Rancheria.

It is off to the right of the trail as you come into a clearing.

I think that by the time that we get into the park on Friday night, we might miss seeing a ranger to get our permit, so it just might be considered part of the Saturday quota.

Just depends if I can get off work a little earlier.

This Friday of which you speak is April 17 right ?

If that is the weekend, I'm planning on going, and can fit two more people in my car if anyone wants to car pool. Conversely, I only have me in my car, so I would be happy to car pool with others if they have room in their ride.

If I drive, I'm going to make a detour to Valley Brew to drop off some of my beers for their brew master on my way to the park.

I'm planning on going up Friday also. I hadn't thought about it but I like the idea of hiking in on Friday.

I'd be leaving Petaluma in time to get to the trailhead no later than 10am; probably a 5am departure for me. If anyone is interested in a ride: I live in Petaluma and would be driving through Vallejo, Benicia, Martinez, and south on 680 & 580, to get the Altamont Pass, and points east. I've got room for two plus packs, etc.

well I am not opposed to hiking in on Friday. It is a 7 mile hike or so and is pretty flat. Cameron were you planning on going in on Friday too? I am open to all options!

Bob I am not sure if you are allowed to camp along the trail until Rancheria. Pretty much you are walking along a bluff on the lake. That is a good question though. I would like to leave San Jose around 12-ish on Friday which would put us at the trailhead around 3-3:30. At that point I would not mind hiking in. The trail is pretty easy all the way up to Rancheria. Being that it is Friday, I am sure that quota's should not be a problem.

Sorry I started this whole Friday thing. Just want to make clear what I was saying. I understood the trip to be a one-night trip starting Saturday. However, I have Friday off work so was thinking of hiking in Friday instead and waiting for the rest of the crew to show up Saturday. (This is still a maybe until I clear the early departure with my family.) I only mentioned it because I wanted you to know that if you don't see me at the backpacker trailhead campground Friday night or Saturday morning, you don't need to wait for me. If you don't see me, that means I've already hiked in. Anyway, I'm up for company Friday if others want to hike in Friday. Cameron, if you want to hike in Friday, we could carpool because I think we live close enough.

Sounds good to me. If we are hiking by 3:30, we would have 4 hours or so of daylight to go the 6 miles in. Ought to be do-able.

According to the Nat Geo TOPO Yosemite map, the no overnight camping zone extends about 3/4 the way in — but most of the rest of the way looks so steep that I'm betting camping there is not practical anyway. So I agree that hiking in means planning to make Rancheria that night.

I think Lane & I are riding up Saturday morning. Probably 12ish or so trailhead start on Saturday. Another friend – Aaron – hasn't formally accepted or declined my invitation yet. Wife was thinking about it, but finally said "no."

Do we need to be worried about trail quotas? Are permits still do-able? I don't want to get all the way out there & be turned back.

Effectively, you can not camp before Rancheria.

By the time that you are in an area that you are allowed to, you might as well push to little bit of extra distance and make the campsite.

The areas along the trail are rocky with not to many open spots for pitching a tent/tarp and water is scarce after the two waterfalls….you can probably find trickles of water, but nothing major for a campsite.

I am in Singapore right now visiting family…going to be looking forward to returning and going on this trip will everyone, which is 1 week after I return.

Fun being able to keep in touch on the forum via long distance, if that makes any sense.

On the NOAA site I only get to Wednesday. They say: Partly Sunny to Mostly Cloudy, high 64, low 28. That's mostly the forecast for the whole week. Does your source show a warming trend? I'd prefer low 41 to low 28 any day, or night.

I'll keep looking. I do have a number to call the National Weather Service, in Monterey, and talk to a weatherperson. You can get them to narrow their focus for a specific area. They can look at trends in the jetstream, and offshore fronts that may produce unstable conditions. Sometimes though I think they do a little "tea leaf reading". In the end it's just more information. More input on "how light may I go and have an enjoyable trip.

Guys this is the site that I use. They just started using a pin point process that narrows your search. We are in for some good weather.
