This has evaded me for some time now – i like to take down socks/booties for camp and sleep. The rugged kind (like my Sieera designs drizone or my noname mocassin) can be used for light camp walking ok since they have think soles and some sidewalls – but then they are rather heavy. Probabaly a good choice for really frigid conditions. But for simple 3 season stuff i would rather take a light item like the sea2summit down socks….but then how do i protect them when out of the tent?

i thought of plastic bags but that is too fragile – any ideas/techniques?

Have a bit of a search through the archives. I remember a couple of threads in the past year about lightweight camp shoes. Someone made their own "slippers" from cutting up a foam mat… looked like a good lightweight option, and if you really want to save some grams you can lay them flat and insert them back into the sleeping mat at night. Sorry, don't have the link.

Ashley,

Even better, cut the soles out of your current (nice italics) sleep pad. Then you can press fit it back in at night before you go to sleep. No net weight penalty at all.

Ok – i see what you are saying – make UL sandals from say GG thinlight 1/8" or 1/4" with maybe just bunjee cord loop cross the top to secure over my down socks…

but that will not prevent water coming in? I thought i saw someone (roger caffin?) talking about Tyvek boot bags (like the type used in clean rooms??) that are quite wtaer ressitant – has anyone tried this?

1.5 oz per pair – lifespan of 1-2 days for snowshoeing. They are fairly fragile, but if you were careful you could use them in camp.
They wet through while snowshoeing by the time I got to camp. I had high hopes for them.

I use the same thing with a foam liner for water crossings and camp shoes. They work well if you take care of them much like most UL gear and weigh nothing.

looks like a plan!
Will need to get intouch with my Nanotech/Semicon friends for some tyvek booties and then i'm off for testing!

thanks all
