I have two new unused sets that I intend to test out in the Whites before bringing them to Rainier this winter- the MSR Denali Ascent “Evo” and the Tubbs Elevation. Love the binding on the Elevation, but share the concerns about the unrestricted movement that the reviewers on this site had. Reviewers here seem to love the regular Denali Ascent, so was leaning towards those, but wondered whether the version I have, the Evo, is just as good. Anyone with experience with either snowshoe? And with what might be best on Rainier?

From my own and others experiences with Rainier snow..take the MSR’s. They excell on it :-)
Thanks Sarbar….what about tails for extra flotation- i’ve never needed them in the Whites in the winter- but I’m guessing the snow in winter on Rainier is different that snow in the Whites. What do you think? Unnecessary weight? Thanks!
Take the tails, leave them in the car if applicable. Cascade volcano snow comes in several ranges of wet and heavy[except, maybe, Glacier Peak].
Last winter I climbed from Paradise to 12k on MSR Lightning Ascents. Above Muir most of the other climbers on the route switched to crampons, but suffered in the drifts on the route with balling etc. I was comfortable in the Lightning Ascents on steep ice traverses to about 25 degrees (we were on the Gib ledges route). I eventually switched to crampons for the ledges. The snowshoes were great on the ice.
Of the two you mention, I’d lean to the MSR’s for climbing and the Tubbs for touring.
I agree with Larry..take tails and when you get there, you’ll know wether to pack them. And if you do carry them, well, at least they are not too heavy! ;-)
