Golite Ultra 20 Hack Job

Opinions Wanted –

I'm 5'9" 175#, and really like using a quilt, but I want one that is Wide. I'm a fetal postion sleeper, and a roller. I have a Cocoon Hoody and Pants for camp and backup, am planning for 30° weather but know 20° is always possible.

I'm looking at the Long Ultra 20 with the intent of removing one baffle at the bottom to get the length to 72" and then, "sewing back" the edges IF the width is to great. A Regular is 3" narrower than a Long, about like a Nunatak Arc Alpinist, which from experience is to narrow for me at 20°.

Or I could turn the top baffle into a collar and narrow the top a bit.

Thoughts? Admonitions? Experience?

With Nunatak you can specify the desired width and length, you can also request overfill to maintain temp rating when increasing coverage. This will add slightly to the cost but you get a custom sleep system. Email Tom outlining your desired specifications and he will guide you from there.

I'm not sure where your $180.00 comes from, a standard Nunatak ARC Alpinist lists at $387.00 which I agree is not cheap. Good luck with getting/making a system that works well for you.

I make my own bags and quilts. What I now use all the time as a quilt started life as a sleeping bag with a longish 3/4 zip. I haven't made any changes to it: I just leave the zip completely undone. The footbox is an excellent idea for a quilt anyhow: it keeps the bottom end under control.
