I'm a photographer looking to do backpacking trips with a full load of SLR camera gear. The chargers for the camera batteries are specific to each camera and typically charge with a 2 prong AC outlet. Most of the portable chargers I found in other threads on the forum were for charging iPods and cell phones using small connector cables. Are there any portable solar chargers that come with AC prong plug adapters and are capable of charging a full SLR battery like those used in the Canon 1D or 5D series of cameras?

Kari,

The Canon EOS 1D uses a NIMH 12 V with 1650 maH capacity. Charging this battery is an ideal match for a solar cell such as the Solaris 25. Use Radio Shack alligator clips and moderately thick multi-strand wire to create a supple custom wiring harness. In bright light, the solar cell will charge the battery in 1-2 hours. The difficultly is that overcharging can damage the NiMH cells. This is most likely to occur when the battery is charged but still connected in a sunny environment. You can keep an eye on what you’re charging, and unplug it if it starts to get hot. Alternatively use a Brunton 12v regulator (a few oz) between the panel and the battery to prevent overcharging in an unattended mode.

Wow Kari, beautiful photography and a great philosophy. Don't let anyone change who you are and you will go far. Ali
