    What I want to know now is if a Giardia vacccine would really make a difference for backpacking. That is, how much backcountry illness is caused by Giardia vs. other bacteria, viruses, protozoans, etc.?

    I think a Giardia vaccine would make a big difference. While the majority of backcountry illness is not Giardia, I think it's likely the majority of serious (as in having to seek treatment) gastrointestinal illness contracted in the backcountry IS Giardia.
