I’ve heard it claimed that plastic boots are key for alpine mountaineering. So first, what do people think of this claim? Is there any way around having to strap pounds of plastic to your feet? Or more generally, what is the UL crowd’s approach to the extreme cold / mixed climbing footwear problem? Second, what are some examples of boots that represent good solutions to the problem while minimizing weight?
I take it that this issue isnt really on the backpackinglight radar? Well, I’ll let you know what I figure out.

G-spot doesn’t always attract the right clientale.
In extreme cold weather and at altitude there probably isn’t a good substitute for Plastic. Sometimes it’s a question of which Plastic Boots–single or double.
For weight saving in less harsh conditions I like La Sportiva Trangos.
