I've been looking at the Arcteryx Gamma SV Hoody made of Polartec Powershield (full weight in the torso and shoulders, lightweight elsewhere).

I looks like a great piece but, it has two zippers running vertically along both sides of the front. They terminate about where I would suspect ones backpack straps would be. This is the toggle part of the zipper and this would mean that the toggle is trapped under the shoulder strap (if I'm right) which would be a bad thing!

I can't imagine Arcteryx messing this up! Does anyone have any experience backpacking with this jacket?

I have been using a Gamma AR as my around-town jacket for years (the SV without hood). I just loaded up a pack and tried it on: yes, the zippers are under the shoulder straps. I could access them if I fiddled about, but they were mostly covered. The reason I never noticed this before is because I find the jacket useless for anything I do, which is winter hiking, backpacking, ice climbing and rock climbing. As such, it has never been under a pack for more than 30 minutes.

I also have the Gamma MX Hoody- and those pockets are much more accessable with a pack (chest pockets are great). However, compared to my Patagonia and Cloudveil softshells (Ready Mix and Schoeller Dryskin), this jacket also is useless for me.

So, your fears about access might be justified depending on how the jacket fits you and how your pack straps are cut. I also have the Proshell Beta AR that uses the same zipper design as the Gamma AR and SV. I can access these zippers due to the much larger torso volume of the shell- so fit might decide access for you.
