would it be safe to cook under a cuben tarp with an alcohol stove? Would the heat melt/shrink the cuben or deform it in some way.

It would be no sfaer (or less safe) than cooking under any other light tarp material. They are all rpone to melting or burning if they get hot enough. You really shouldn't be cooking so close to the fabric that it would get that hot though.
