    Not sure why you need to hold the pipette in the flame for 3 seconds, but if you do then definitely don't use them.

    3 seconds gives you a margin of safety. Also a minute amount of alcohol will stay on the tip even though the liquid is sucked back into the pipette. Allowing it to ignite. Thus the 3 seconds to see what might happen in that small time frame (it could have been 2 seconds I was counting very slow)
