Need sleeping bag help

Try a women's bag. They should come in the shorter length.

MontBell has their Alpine Burrow Bag #3 which is 30 degree, synthetic, and 2 lbs. You can also close off the extra length in the footbox.

Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends sells some of their bags in 5'-6" Length. You might not can find one for $200 new but perhaps used. Women's Bags are another choice.

Playing Basketball all of my life, being short (relatively, I am 6'-0") was always a little bit of a curse, but in backpacking, being short, can be a big help. More tents work well, and shorter bags mean less weight.

With all due respect, definitely don't get a women's bag. They're not just shorter men's bags. They're actually shaped differently! I didn't believe that for a while, then I got in one. My shoulders were squeezed together, but with my arms at my sides I had all sorts of room to chicken-flap my hands down by my hips.

Western Mountaineering makes the ideal bag for you. It's called the SummerLite. Available in a 5'6" length. Rated 32F. Weighs ~17-18 ounces. I'm 5'6" and fit one perfectly. Mine has a couple ounces of overfill, super warm, but took a long time to get as it was a custom order. Stock should be fine if you're a warm sleeper anyway. Bag retails ~300. I believe the Highlite, same temp rating, 15-16 ounces, is also available 5'6", about $270 (only 1/2 length zip).

Take a look at the Integral Designs bags. They have fiber fill Short, Regular and Long bags in regular and broad widths.

I would also suggest ID Primaloft bags, specifically the "Renaissance" in short/regular size. I find these to be the BEST synthetic bags I have ever used and I have had a fair whack of bags!

David DOES have a point here, tho', I have known others who find synthetic bags "cold" for their rating and they ARE heavier, no question.

I like a bag rated to 20*F for summer, but, it is colder here than where you are; I would go with a WM Summerlite if you can afford it and an MEC Merlin -3 bag if you can't. I would also give up beer and whatever else I had to in order to buy the best gear, it DOES make a difference.

The ID Renaissance bag is a little heavy for me and I don't think I would need a 20 degree bag for three season hiking. Might be a good winter bag. Also a little more than I was looking to spend.

Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends are both down they may be warmer for there weight but I do worry about there actual warmth when wet. I will be under a tarp alot and rain could blow in and then I am left shivering the rest of the night. But the less than a pound weight makes them very attractive though. Anyway they are out of my price range. Nice bags though, I had a used Linelite and it barely weighed anything.

Michael, thanks for the offer. It would be hard to refuse but right now I am a little short on funds. I have to pay off my GG Virga first and then save some money.

The Montbell burrowbag looks like a great bag but that extra 4 inches of bag is a waste to carry. The drawcord at the last baffle helps close off the extra space in the bag for more warmth but it doesn't help take off the weight of the baffle. I beleive that bag could be a good 2 or 3 ouces lighter without that baffle. The price is right, the weight is tolerable, the shoulder girth is smaller than most and it compresses small. So far that is what I am leaning towards.

Keep the suggestions coming it will probably be next month sometime before I buy a bag. Hopefully the internet retailers lower the price of three season bags by then?
