I ordered a Granite Gear Alpine Vapor this week. In addition to ice axe loops, it also has gear loops on the hip belt and a place to strap on crampons. I was hoping to not only use this as my normal backpack, but also to use it to climb Mt. Rainier at some point. I'm wondering if it would be big enough to carry for mountaineering. Plus, I'm wonder if those gear loops would actually be useful for mountaineering. I'm heading out to do about 40 miles this weekend and I'm really tempted to just cancel my order and get a regular Vapor Trail. Otherwise, I'm stuck using a cheap external frame nightmare this weekend. lol Any opinions? Thanks! :)

You might be able to get away with it if you go straight up Rainier, but few people do that. I don't see how you could do an overnight with it. You simply need too much equipment to be safe, even if you are alone (ie, no protection).

What will you be using it for mostly? If you are only occasionally going to be mountaineering, I would get the Vapor Trail. On Rainier, you are almost always going to have your crampons on and your ice ax in hand. For the few miles to Muir (if you don't have them on already) you can stash them in the compression straps.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I called and had them set aside a Vapor Trail in my size. I'm going to pick it up after work and head for Arkansas! I'm tempted to get the down version of my bag too (MontBell Super Stretch #2). I've never been around down though. It would suck if I got it out there and found I was allergic to it! lol Thanks y'all!!!

I would recommend "Allen and Mike's Really Cool Backpackin' Book". It's short with illustrations, making it a quick and easy read. They also have a book called "Lighten Up!", if you're interested in getting your weight down further. Do you already have all of your gear?

Eric, there are a lot of people willing to help but I would start a new topic/thread so your question gets the attention it deserves.

Unless they have changed the design, I'm pretty sure the 'Vapor Trail' and 'Alpine Vapor' are dimensionally identical. Difference is material and a few loops on the Alpine Vapor. I have owned both and they served me very well.

For size comparison, the 3rd (i think) picture down in the link is my Alpine Vapor with a Tarptent Double rainbow in the side pocket and a pair of NL Backcountry rescues strapped to the back.

ah, just realized you bums aren't members :), so don't bother with the link. I'll post a photo when I get home…
