Two winter bag questions

Gordon, prior to this year the MontBell UL SS DH used 725 power down fill, rated to -9 F, compared to 800 currently. The data that I have for the old model gives a "comfortable temperature range" from 50 F to -9 F, and a "usable temperature range" down to -40F. MB defines their terms as follows: " The Comfortable Temperature range shows the temperatures in which you can restfully and peacefully sleep 8 hours or more wearing only a thin layer; the Usable Temperature range showa the temperatures in which you can sleep in relative confort for 6 to 8 hours."

I have no info on the WM bag. Happy trails!

Based on ownership/use of both Montbell and WM products, there is no question for me, I would buy the WM Kodiak and would go with it in the original version. I have a custom made Integral Designs XPD2-Himalayan with overfill and would not buy an overfill option again, after five years use of this bag…too damm hard to stuff and I do not think that it really makes that much difference.

I will say, that for 200 and more lb. guys, I am one, too, the WM Kodiak strikes me as being the best bag available for general use in most of North America. I was going to buy one to go with my WM Alpenlite Super and then, last winter, a friend sent me a Valandre Shocking Blue, an incredible bag, the finest I have ever used.

But, for value and superb quality, the WM Kodiak is one tremendous bag and my choice for a general duty one bag purchase. I have solo camped in remote BC wilderness at -40 and would have no hesitation using this bag with some extra items, none at all.
