Thanks to Steve for producing and distributing a limited run of titanium ice axes similar to the aluminum headed "helix potty trowel". I was one of the lucky few who got one and tested it out last weekend in the Minarets.
Here were my comments to Steve after receiving the ax:
"I received your limited edition work of art–initialed and #22 in the series. I immediately placed an order for a walnut frame, gold guilded edgeboard and high quality glass to have it framed. Then I realized it was a tool and I started thinking of the ski trips and mountaineering it would get used on. I cancelled the framing order, stripped naked and did a snow dance (we were close to solstice) in the hope that it would hasten winter and my use of your ice ax.
Thanks for an incredible tool. The titanium head is sharper and will hold its point much better than than the aluminum version I already have.

The ax is sturdy, will hold an edge better (and has a sharper edge to begin with). It is not UIAA certified but I believe it is durable for general use including on ice. It will not chop steps very well–it would be like driving a nail with a piece of bamboo–just not the heft for the job.
