I'm looking to pick up the lightest 1 or 2 degree accuracy compass out there, as I need to carry one as part of my mandatory gear for the Marathon des Sables in Morocco. The lightest 2 degree compasses I've seen are the Recta DO 110 or 150 at 23 grams. Anyone know of a lighter compass?

Those Recta compasses are very usable. Anything much smaller (in diameter) tends to jam up in my experience.

That's good to know. I intend to use this compass as a backup. I'll generally rely on my Garmin Forerunner for orientation over the dunes.

I think a watch with compass could have that accuracy.

There is a bunch of suunto or casio watch that can do that.

I am using a casio prw-1300, 60g compass with a lot of other feature fo hiking. Good thing is that you don't have to worry about the bateries since it's solar.

Same could be said for magnetic compasses, you know. Shine light on them and they show you north.

I agree with what I think Roger was saying… for a backup… you should have something that is fail safe. A watch, even a solar one, might not be the best idea for a backup. The beauty of a magnetic compass is it's simplicity. Also, I don't know what the lightest would be, but I wouldn't buy any compass without a mirror. A mirror makes using a compass easier and more accurate.
