I am trying to decide between cuben fiber or spinnaker fabric on my future tarp purchase. Looking at the MLD Grace Solo, there is a $60 premium for the cuben but it is only 1.7 oz lighter. For me, $60 is not worth only 1.7 oz.
However, are there any other reason why I should pick cuben over spinnaker? Is the strength of cuben that much greater compared to spinnaker? Is cuben much less noisy?
Not that I think that Cuben is is necessarily worth all the extra $ but its is a very quiet fabric. I like its "hand" or its feel a lot more than spinnaker . Spinnaker is easy to puncture, you will see the dimples in it if you accidentally step on it a few times while setting it up. Cuben seems a little better in that regard. I personally like cuben better.
Another point against spinnaker fabrics is that it is not fully waterproof. My tests, as well as the information collected by others, suggest that it is less waterproof than silnylon an that the harder coating may lose its waterproofnes faster. Cuben fiber is completely waterproof, it is a foil.
Spectralite can be patched with duct tape if a hole should get punched in it. If I remember correctly, Ron mentioned that this not the case with Spintex where SilNet and a Spintex patch are needed (supplied with his Spintex items). I have the Grace Solo in Spectralite and love it. Absolutely waterproof and no stretching. My only piece of Spinntex gear is the Revelation and that is holding up well, too.
