Part 2 of gear debrief from Escalante trip:

I need warm weather underwear that is not polypro. I've been using REI MTS boxer briefs, good ventilation, quick drying, but many do they hold a stink. Cotton obviously is a non-starter. Anyone use wool or silk that works in heat?

Their Techwick clothing (I think it's polyester impregnated with silver nitrate to resist bacteria) resists stink remarkably well. I have a pair of their boxers, and I think they make other kinds of underwear, too.

Yes. Sportslick / Bodyglide applied early and often enough work.

The downside? Unless you put it on EVERYTHING down there, you have to learn the hard way which areas on YOU chaff!

I use Icebreaker (merino) boxer briefs; I think the weight is their 150. I've used a number of different synthetics (and cottons, though not on trail!), and these merino boxer briefs are by far my favorite. Actually, I've been thinking about buying a half dozen pair for daily home use. They keep me cool when I'm hot, but don't freeze me when the temperature drops. I love the merino in heat! To me, more comfortable than any other underwear I've worn. They manage moisture really well, keeping me dryer (or at least feeling dryer) than most others I've worn. They're comfy! No chafing at all, almost silky. No stink. Personally, I prefer the boxer brief set up, seems to further reduce chafing for me. After a few days (maybe 5?), I've found that if I've been workin' hard that jock itch can be a problem, so I'll sometimes supplement with Gold Bond or baby powder or something…

Ibex Seamless Boxer Briefs. I find them lighter and more comfortable than the Icebreaker boxers. Icebreakers are also good in warm weather, but I find the Ibex ones more comfortable.

I second the suggestion of Ibex seamless boxer briefs. Just got back from a nice overnight a few minutes ago, the Ibex performed perfectly as always. High temp yesterday was 72, today was 76. Uphill hiking today beside a creek (read: humid!) and I never got that slimy feeling I get with synthetics. Last night, low temp was about 40, never felt any flash-off chilling when I stopped in the dark to camp. Plus they never seem to ride up, even with lots of climbing. A little pricey, but so worth it!
