I ‘ve been ripping my hair out trying to work out the mathematics and conceptual drawings to put together several DIY tent and tarp ideas, especially the patterns. I’m just not very good at mathematics (though I can draw well), so I find transferring the 3D drawings into flat patterns a big challenge.

I was wondering if anyone might know of any Mac CAD software that could do this kind of work. Preferably not one of those thousand or more dollars offerings.

Thanks very much!

I second that. If you're not a previous user of drafting programs, it might be difficult starting up with sketchup, but if you stay with it, you'll be rewarded with a tool that's well suited to making 3D drawings and generating 2D patterns from them.

I use sketchup to design shelters as it takes all the math out of the job. I just measure then add 1" to all sides for seaming.

Miguel,
SketchUp will take a little time to learn, but there are excellent tutorials and examples. There are a few keep concepts, like realigning the axis to make it easier to get dimension call-outs, but most of it is very straightforward.

It took me about a day to get from zero to this….

And between Tim and I, you've got a couple on on-line resources as well…

Edit: Pretty darn funny…. Miguel posted his frustration in November of '05. Got to read every line……
