Anybody out there know of an item similar to the Gatewood Cape? Have a link….?

Aside from looking for myself my hiking partner likes my Gatewood but not the critter inviting lack of a floor. I know the net can be purchased along with but was wondering if anything else is out there (a poncho tent set up).

If you want an integrated floor you'll need to look at tarptents. Something like a Lunar Solo or Contrail.

I have often wondered why no other manufacturer has made a gatewood cape type of shelter (enclosed shelter/poncho). I like the concept, but the 11 oz weight is more then my poncho tarp and bivy. I would really like to see a cuben version (I e-mailed Ron about this – he says nope), or a differnt configuration of it…like a Cuben Mid with a hood in the center. Seems easy enough.

I've got an old Virga I use when it's gonna be wet. Great tent but I still have to bring my rain gear.

What sort of bivy/tarp set up do you use which brings you under 11oz? Just curious.

I bring no raingear so my Gatewood's 11oz. is my tent and my raingear. Saves bottom line. Not the best raingear in the world but it does the trick…

I'm not a material guru, but my definition of "Cuben Fiber" is a super lightweight waterproof material. You can look around, but the stuff I used on my Bivy is about 0.5 oz/yd^2 which is about half the weight of silnylon…I think. I believe it was originally created for the sails of racing boats. All the lightest BP stuff is cuben fiber. When I refer to a cuben version of the Gatewood Cape, I am referring to manufacturing the same product but using Cuben Fiber instead. This would yield a 5 ounce (or something around there) Gatewood Cape, which would be killer.
My summer setup is a MLD Cuben Poncho/Tarp @ 4.0 oz and a homemade cuben bivy @ 4.1 oz…total weight is 8.1 ounces.

That's quite a set up. I now remember this fabric being mentioned. Appreciate the reply.
