From searching it seems built-in belts are prefered, but I couldn't find any suggestions on separate belts.
I bought a pair of North Face Scrambler convertible pants and they fit really well.
Any affordable belt reccomendations? Or types of belts that work well for you.
I wear my hip belt on my waist, mabye a little above waistline and I wear my pants a little below waistline.
My belt is homemade from a piece of 1" nylon webbing and a ladderloc connection. Seems to get the job done just fine.
I use the Patagonia Friction Belt. Nylon webbing with aluminum buckle. Doesn't slip and you can even double back through the buckle. 2 oz and $15. A long accessory strap would also work.
Like Art I use a length of 1" nylon webbing with plastic buckle and tensioner. Light, adjustable, dries quickly and as it was made up from my scrap/spares box it was cheap as chips!
I remember a guy in the lab I used to work in used a length of bunsen burner rubber tubing, with a knot… (Them's were the days!)
You could try bungee cord too.
I have the following pre-made belts. Still, under a hip belt or harness I think the integral/tunneled type (or even a drawstring) is better, lower profile and you can get away with a smaller webbing.

I prefer this one. Tri-glide buckle (must thread to remove) and heavier webbing makes it easy to thread through belt loops. All black for office and the nylon speeds security checks. Made in Colorado.
