In January this year I bought a Deuter Futura Zero 40 for ladies.
Now entering its 9th month of wear I can say I LOVE that pack. The pack isn’t the lightest choice – it weighs in on my scale at 3 lbs for a 2,450 ci pack. What it does do is fit my small torso, it is designed for females and most of all, for us short ladies.
Why am I talking about a 3 lb pack here?
Well…..3 weekends ago I wore my 3,500 ci ‘pack donkey’ pack on a trip of 24 miles in 2 days. 4 years ago I injured my lower back – all it takes is a bad fitting pack to re injure it. After that trip I couldn’t bend for a week and was on near bed rest. It hurts SO bad when my back goes out. After that trip I had to have Kirk help me out of bed, off the couch, etc for a week or so.
Suffice to say this past weekend I wore the Deuter. I walked nearly the same miles and came home feeling good. No back pain beyond normal pains, no stiffness and most of all – my hips were not ‘locked up’ – which my back injury causes (where it feels like I am being ripped apart as I try to do normal things like sitting or using the bathroom!)
Looking back I realized that on every trip this year my back/hips have felt great except for the one time I didn’t wear it. Previous to the Deuter I would suffer extreme pain on multi day trips – particularly in the lumbar area and my hips.
I think a big part of it is the pack’s design – it is narrow and doesn’t project out far behind you, it hugs the hips – the padding is tight – not lumpy or too soft. I don’t get the “slide down” effect where the pack starts falling down over my butt. It sits where it is supposed to be.
I use the pack for dayhiking, snowshoeing and backpacking. I carry about 17-18 lbs normally in it, I have had it up to upper 20’s (not that I wanted it that heavy!). It rides the same light or heavy.
Sure it isn’t a 10 ounce pack, but it is a good pack. And I can deal with it. Walking pain free rocks!
