Hi all
I was back in Japan last week and came across these magnesium v-stakes:

After a bit of checking around it seems that most aluminium v-stakes weigh about 20-23 grams, titanium v-stakes are 10-13 grams whereas these magnesium v-stakes are …. 8 grams (and 17.4 cm long and 14mm wide).
At about US$3.80 per peg they also seem to be roughly the same cost as the titanium v stakes around.
Sounds good. Could they be used as a firesteel as well?
I have never tested magnesium stakes but I would put money on the titanium v stakes being tougher.

I wondered about that. I could see it happening inadvertently …
The other thing is that magnesium irritates skin – which is why my magnesium mobile phone had a clear lacquer coating on it which you were warned against scratching.
They wouldn't replace the steel in a steel-and-flint firestarter kit, but you could grind off some magnesium filings as firestarting fuel. If you've never seen it burn, magnesium gets super hot and once ignited is unaffected by water.
I agree that titanium would be much stronger in this application.
