Wing stove & trappers mug?

The wing stove and Trapper mug make an excellent combination. I've used this set-up on two trips thusfar. One fuel tab is enough to boil the 475mL of water with enough to spare to put a second mug on to boil.

I estimate you could cut a fuel tab in half and be able to bring one 475mL mug to a boil. You should consider the addition of a windscreen to the set-up to maximize efficiency.

Backpacking Light is waiting on the delivery of a Caldera Cone specifically designed to fit the Trapper Mug. I've tested the prototype and it works wonderfully.

I just snagged a Trappers Mug and had a chance to test it with the esbit wing stove. 16 fl oz would fill it just to the brim, which is pushing it if you truly need a good boil. A lot of freezer bag meals only require the water to be hot, rather than at a roiling boil, so it might be usable.

Otherwise I think the wing stove & ti foil pairs pretty well w/ the Trapper, and it all fits inside the mug with room to spare. Less than one esbit tab does the trick, maybe as little as a half cube. Wind makes an enormous difference, even with a maximum-coverage windscreen (which the ti foil is not). You would definitely need to shelter it from steady rain. A roiling boil would also make the flame sputter if the water level is high enough to spill over the brim (more likely with 16 fl oz).. Also, the Trapper is a bit narrow for the wing stove's pot supports so its not as stable as it could be, but it's fine if you're careful.

Personally I'd look closely at a Caldera setup, for alcohol or esbit. That's what I've settled on with my Trapper.

EDIT: oops, posted on top of Sam, but looks like we're mostly in agreement. I'm very happy with my Trapper/Caldera setup so far, though I'm sure I don't have nearly the testing experience with mine yet. I'd personally recommend the Caldera + Esbit GramCracker over the wing stove if solid fuel was your preference.

Dave, I have used my Snow Peak mini solo pot on a wing stove and found it barely ok. At 3.75" dia. it was a bit small for the pot supports, and large amounts of the flame lapped up the sides or the pot, which ment heat energy wasted. The Trapper mug is smaller at 3.25" dia, so these problems would be amplified. This is not to say it can't be done, it's just not optimal efficiency. For better results I now use an AG pot (4.75" dia.) that produces a fast boil on less than one tab. A wind screen is a must, and BPL tabs work better than Esbit.
