Being in a colder part of the country, this winter I've started hiking in waterproof pants, after previously trucking through a lot of wet weather in running shorts.

I've found one of the main plusses is that it stops/slows my shorts underneath from wicking water up under my rain jacket to soak my torso.

I don't want to carry or wear rain pants all the time though.. the problem is that all shorts are deliberately designed to wick moisture, which forces you do put on rain pants (which I wouldn't normally bother carrying unless it's cold), or get wet from below.

Maybe some 80's nylon soccer/rugby league shorts would be better than the current crop of stretch/soft touch fabric in running shorts. eVent shorts would be nice… but buying a pair of eVent pants and cutting them up is a bit extravagant.

Buy a pair of cheap waterproof breathable pants (golite reed?) and hack them up? Or Tyvek?

I've hacked a pair of reed's in to knickers and I love them.

Yeah I'm starting to look speculatively at my SD Hurricane pants which I paid a princely sum of $28 for (actually aside from the ankle zipper failing they've been fantastic).

Black isn't an ideal color though, and I imagine PU coated nylon shorts could be a bit sweaty going up a hill. Also the bulky cut + long rise on waterproof pants makes it hard to get something as minimal as running shorts out of them.

There are several companies that used to make shorts out of windstopper which should be fairly weather resistant and not wick. These were normally marketed to bicyclists. I haven't seem them recently, but I haven't been looking for them either.

My suggestion would be to go for a rain wrap/skirt/kilt. Several companies like ULA sell sil-nylon wraps. The cheap version of this is to use a large plastic bag… cut a hole in the top and tuck in into the waist band.
